Foz do Douro e Leça da Palmeira
On this route, you will be enchanted by the right bank of the Douro River to the sea. Along the way, we will pass through some historical neighborhoods that border the river, from Miragaia, through Massarelos, to Lordelo do Ouro. We will arrive at Foz do Douro, a place that only in the late nineteenth century became part of the municipality of Porto. A bathing area of excellence, much appreciated by the Porto aristocracy. Here we will find the beautiful Jardim do Passeio Alegre and the oldest district of the western part of the city, Foz Velha. This beautiful garden near the mouth of the Douro River was designed by the German landscape gardener Emílio David, author of the well-known gardens of the Crystal Palace and Cordoaria. The route continues along the Atlantic avenues of Brazil and Montevideo to the city of Matosinhos, an important seaside resort area. Matosinhos is a modern city, known for the best fish and seafood restaurants in the region. We will take a short break near the beach and the Leixões Harbor. On the way back there will still be time to stop at a special belvedere, and have a beautiful panoramic view of the Douro River estuary, with the nature reserve and the left bank. ----------------------------------------------------------- Extension of the Seafront Route: If you wish we can extend this route to 3 hours, which will also include the beaches of Leça da Palmeira, the Lighthouse and Boa Nova Tea House. This unique building, built on the rocks by the Atlantic Ocean, was designed by the architect Álvaro Siza, awarded with the Pritzker Prize.
Passeio Alegre Garden, Foz Velha, S. João Batista Fort, "Anemona", Leixões harbor, Matosinhos beach. Optional: Boa Nova teahouse and lighthouse.
